Arkansas State Teachers Association Joins Groups in 30 States in National Campaign to Promote Teacher Freedoms

Little Rock, AR – Today, the Arkansas State Teachers Association (ASTA) announced that it will participate in National Employee Freedom Week, a first-of-its-kind national campaign to promote teachers' rights of association.

National Employee Freedom Week (NEFW), which will run from June 23-29, 2013, will highlight how unionized teachers and other employees often don't know that they have the legal right to opt-out of union membership — and will help educate those employees on their options so they can make the decision about union membership that's best for them.

NEFW is a national campaign with 40 partner organizations in 30 states across the nation.

To celebrate NEFW, the Arkansas State Teachers Association will be conducting widespread outreach efforts that inform teachers about their right to select an association of their choice. This nationwide effort will promote informed decision making and empower educators so that they can select an association that best matches their budget and beliefs.

The Arkansas State Teachers Association will also participate in releasing the results of a statewide poll of union households showing a startlingly high percentage of union members are interested in leaving their unions. This information will be released on Monday, June 24.

"We are pleased to sign on to National Employee Freedom Week," stated ASTA Executive Director Dr. Michele Ballentine-Linch. "ASTA believes that teachers, as college-educated professionals, can and will make choices that reflect their values. This pro-teacher movement is a step in the right direction for teacher rights."

ASTA and our national partner, the Association of American Educators (AAE) will be participating in outreach efforts. The number of organizations participating in National Employee Freedom Week is also expected to increase in the coming weeks.
