ASTA Sponsors MATHCOUNTS in 2012

ASTA is proud to be a major sponsor of Arkansas' annual MATHCOUNTS competition. MATHCOUNTS, the rigorous math competition for all 6th through 8th grade students, is often called the "spelling bee of math" and consists of a series of math problems for middle school students in a timed environment.

The year's competition is coordinated by ASTA member Ronnie Flowers from Rogers, AR and will take place March 31, 2012 on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Top math teams will each take home a beautiful trophy, provided by ASTA, for their school's trophy case. The top individual winner receives an all-expense-paid trip, provided by the national MATHCOUNTS organization, to compete in the 2012 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, FL!

The contest is an amazing opportunity for students and teachers alike. ASTA member Ronnie Flowers has been involved with the organization for 8 years and attests to the great value to student learning through the program. "Studies show that involvement in MATHCOUNTS helps keep students interested in math during the critical years of 6th through 8th grades as well as prepare them for the rigor of higher level mathematics in high school and in AP programs," Flowers mentions.

We encourage members interested in potentially forming a MATHCOUNTS team to attend the festivities. ASTA could provide a grant to an interested educator for forming a team next year! Click here to apply today. Don't forget to mark your calendar for the March 31st deadline.
