Little Rock School District Teachers and Staff: We Believe in You

Dear Little Rock School District Teachers and Staff,

As the executive director of the Arkansas State Teachers Association (ASTA), I am reaching out to let you know that we believe in you. We believe in your dedication to learning and excellence, your ability to reach the students you serve, and your heart to serve kids in our capital city. Also, we believe in your commitment to professionalism.

ASTA is grateful to serve a growing number of Little Rock School District (LRSD) teachers and staff as well as thousands of teachers and public school staff throughout our state. We would be honored to have the opportunity to serve more of you. LRSD leaders should allow ASTA staff to meet with teachers and staff members and to discuss our organization on LRSD campuses. We know Arkansas teachers are true professionals in every sense of the word and respect the rights of their colleagues to explore association options. Nearly half of LRSD teachers are not members of any professional association that provides the legal support and liability insurance necessary to protect one’s educator license and due process rights while providing professional support and member-driven advocacy. Although our ability to inform you about our organization has been unfairly limited by LRSD leadership at the insistence of a few, we are doing all we can to ensure you know there is a non-union, non-partisan organization with the advocacy and professional benefits you need to support and serve your calling: Education.

You deserve to have fair and free access to factual information about all of your rights and options as an educator. Anything less interferes with your ability to make informed decisions that impact your career, family, and students. We encourage LRSD leadership to set high expectations for professionalism and to believe in you, the education professional. For three years we have made these requests so that your ability to join ASTA is not inhibited. ASTA leadership will continue to work with the administration to expand access to LRSD staff. To that end, we have made progress: ASTA materials may be placed in your boxes and emails may be sent to district email addresses. Educators having information about their rights and options should never cause discord or lack of focus about what matters most – serving, teaching, collaborating, and caring for the children of Little Rock. We genuinely believe in The Power of US, ALL of us.

ASTA staff would love to meet you, answer your questions, and discuss how we serve and support education professionals throughout Arkansas while elevating the most noble of professions – education. I pledge to you that the $16.50 you invest each month in ASTA membership will prove well worth it. [5] Nearly everyone working in LRSD is eligible for membership. If you ever change your mind, you can drop your membership at any time without owing another dime. You should never have to pay any organization which you do not wish to belong. LRSD teachers and staff, we believe in you and respect you enough to do all we can to ensure you have the opportunity to make educated decisions and we honor the choices you make. ASTA looks forward to building relationships and empowering and supporting you for the benefit of our students!

With much respect and honor for all you do for Little Rock’s children,

Michele Linch, PhD
