In today's technological society, a growing number of children engage in daily use of smartphones and other handheld devices, providing a unique opportunity for teachers to integrate learning and technology. Below is a list of five, free educational apps, which can be easily integrated into lesson plans and used to cultivate interest in educational subjects.

  1. NASA App
With over 12,000 interstellar images, the NASA App facilitates an interactive medium through which students can discover the wonders of the universe. Students can explore a myriad of images, videos, NASA mission information, news and feature stories, as well as live streaming from NASA TV and the Third Rock radio station. The app hosts printing support, favorites and image bookmarks, permitting teachers to easily save, access, and produce handouts to supplement lesson plans.
  2. Mental Maths (Free)
Online tutoring agency Maths Doctor recently created the Mental Maths app. This app operates according to the principle that "every learner is an individual with their own needs, abilities, strengths and weaknesses." Using the app, students can select a math topic and access a series of questions related to their chosen topic. They can then proceed to solve these questions at their own pace, without the pressure of a time limit.
  3. Science Glossary (Free)
This easy to navigate app provides succinct, descriptive definitions of scientific terms, as well as additional scientific terms relevant to a topic. The app can be used to connect with the free educational website- Vision Learning. Teachers and students can use this app, as well as its affiliated website, to access detailed science learning modules in order to further supplement studies and stimulate scientific curiosity.
  4. Duolingo
Hailed as Apple's "2013 App of The Year," Duolingo enables students to learn a variety of languages. This free app offers written lessons and dictation in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and English. There is also a vocabulary section for practicing previously learned words.
  5. History: Maps of the World
This app is a great resource for developing students' historical and geographical knowledge through access to 178 historical maps from across the world. All maps display and highlight any geopolitical and geographical shifts that have occurred over the course of history. Within the app, maps are grouped by category or era, or found via a keyword search.
