Ever re-arrange a lesson, or lessons, because it turns out that the computer lab is booked solid? Ever have your excitement for a student-driven internet search quelled because, once again, the computer lab isn't available? How about wishing that you could offer students additional material to assist them when struggling or to challenge them when their sailing through the curriculum? Or what about students who don't turn in their worksheet because they "lost" it? I'm sure you've said yes to at least one of these questions. The solution to these difficulties, in many cases, could be that little box at right—the QR Code.

On Monday, two Arkansas school districts— Helena-West School District and Pulaski County Special School District – were brought under state control. Officials cite financial distress, which was a result of declining budgets, decreasing end- of-year funds, and improperly documented overtime hours and purchases, as the reason for the takeovers.

Few states have discovered how to halt the snowballing effect of incarceration and lack of education. Statistics are daunting: Sixty five percent of convicts are high school dropouts and a drop out has an eight times higher likelihood of being in jail or prison during his/her lifetime than a college graduate. The United States averages about $9,644 per pre K-12 student compared to $22,600 per prison inmate. Increasing the high school completion rate by a mere one percent for men ages 20 to 60 would save the country up to $1.4 billion per year in reduced costs of crime.

At the monthly State Board of Education meeting it was announced that Arkansas is ranked #1 in increasing qualifying scores on math, science and English Advanced Placement tests between 2009 and 2010. The top ranking is for both overall student achievement and for minority student achievement.

Teachers and students have a reason to celebrate: recent analysis reveals strong signs of improvement in graduation rates. The Editorial Projects in Education Research Center revealed that the national graduation rate for public school stands at 71.7%, the highest since the 1980's.
