Professional Development – When Is It Worth Your Time?

Teachers are faced with a plethora of choices for their professional development.  Organizations of all size and type offer opportunities to teachers.  If teachers had an infinite amount of time and money, they’d be able to attend everything, but unfortunately both time and money are limited resources.  So, how should a teacher decide which opportunity they should try?

New Jersey’s Agnes Zhelesnik will leave a last impression on her students. Having just celebrated her 100th birthday, Ms. Zhelesnik, or “Granny” as her students call her is the oldest working teacher in America.

 
Resources for Close Reading

While the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts never mention close reading by name as a strategy to use, it is clear by reading the standards and the accompanying documents that this method remains one of the best at reaching the goals CCSS sets forth.  For this reason, states and organizations dedicated to the implementation of CCSS are trumpeting this strategy as “the one” to use in English-Language Arts.  Unfortunately, many teachers remain confused on how to implement close reading in their classroom.

 
ASTA Signs on to National School Choice Week

At the end of this month, the grassroots movement known as National School Choice Week will once again take shape in schools, districts, and cities across the country. From January 26th to February 1st, 2014, school choice advocates across the nation will gather to demonstrate their belief that parents should be empowered to choose the best educational environments for their children. ASTA is proud to be a partner in this unprecedented opportunity to shine a positive spotlight on the need for effective education options for all students and teachers.

NNSTOY Talks about Career Pathways for Teachers

Last month, while most of us were knee-deep in Christmas cookies and holiday celebrations, the
National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY) was thinking about the future of the teaching profession.  Specifically, they teamed up with Pearson to release a report about creating new career pathways for teachers.
