ASTA Teams up with MATHCOUNTS

Our guest blogger is Mr. Ronnie Flowers, a math teacher in Bentonville, AR.

I teach math in Bentonville, and I have been involved in MATHCOUNTS for 7 years in Arkansas, and I can attest to the great value added to student learning through the MATHCOUNTS program.

Studies show that involvement in MATHCOUNTS helps keep students interested in math during the critical years of 6th through 8th grades as well as prepare them for the rigor of higher level mathematics in high school and in AP programs.

MATHCOUNTS is a rigorous math competition for all 6th through 8th grade students. The competition consists of 30 problems for 40 minutes without a calculator, then eight problems in four sets of two at six minutes per set with a calculator, then 10 problems similar in difficulty to the eight but given to teams of four students to work together in 20 minutes, then the final round takes the top ten students from the first two rounds and has them solve problems in a head-to-head competition without a calculator to determine the final top 10.

There is a MATHCOUNTS grant that is now available to assist schools in starting a MATHCOUNTS program provided by ASTA. Last year, Bentonville got a grant for $1,353 which paid for three middle schools and two junior high schools to be involved in MATHCOUNTS, go on a trip to the chapter competition in Fayetteville and to the state meet in Little Rock.

This year after seeing the value in the MATHCOUNTS program, the Bentonville School Board approved to support and fund MATHCOUNTS for the entire district as well as give stipends to coaches. Your school should have already received MATHCOUNTS materials.

It is my hope that you will read this letter and fill out the grant application. The grant deadline is November 15th so that the funds can allocated in a timely manner. The coach does not have to be an ASTA member to receive a grant.

As the volunteer Northwest Arkansas MATHCOUNTS Coordinator I will be happy to assist you and any new coaches in any way. A coach can spend merely 1 to 2 hours each week on MATHCOUNTS and have a very successful program. I know from experience. As a MATHCOUNTS coach, I had at least one student each year do well enough to be one of the four students representing Arkansas in the National MATHCOUNTS competition in Orlando, Florida.

I would love for all students in Arkansas to have the opportunity to be involved in MATHCOUNTS. Let me know if I can be of any assistance, contact me at rflowers@astapro.org or (479)236-6609.

Will you apply?
