Arkansas to Receive $40 Million to Turn Around Failing Schools

Arkansas will receive $40,167,637 in federal funds set aside from the 2009 stimulus act to help turn around the lowest performing public schools in The Natural State.

"Worst performing schools" are just that, they perform in the bottom five percent of the state, have graduation rates below 60%, and consistently fail the students, parents, and communities. School districts apply to the state to get the federal funds. Once all of the lowest-performing Tier III schools have received funding, schools which have failed to meet AYP can be considered for the remaining funds. Schools receiving funds must intend on one of the four recovery models: turnaround, restart, school closure, or transformation.

A list of the schools considered "persistently low performing" is available in Arkansas' application for the federal funds, available here, along with other resources.

Is your school on this list?
Should there be another option for under-performing schools?
